We are currently piloting a measure of benefit-finding and growth (BFG) in large samples of individuals with SB and parents of youth with SB. This project will produce a measure that SB providers can use to build rapport with their patients, gain insight into the self-perceived benefits of SB, promote continued wellbeing by harnessing the positive growth that individuals experience, and make recommendations for intervention, treatment, and support. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/620e876a9f7954070bb59798/49e30bc6-5f1f-4426-add4-fffdfe130f7e/Artwork5.png Current Projects - The MAGICC Support Group for Teens with Spina Bifida In our current project, we are developing, refining, and piloting a telehealth psychosocial support group for teens with Spina Bifida. The MAGICC group stands for Meaning And Growth In Chronic Conditions. All group sessions will be held over zoom. Using principles from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), an evidence-based cognitive-behavioral intervention, and the input of parent, teen, and community partners, the MAGICC support group will aim to nurture the meaning and growth teens experience from the difficulties they have encountered in their chronic condition. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/620e876a9f7954070bb59798/779dde1f-a18c-4b75-90a6-e9a9425348d9/Artwork2TransparentBackground.jpg Current Projects - Benefit-Finding in Military Service Members, their Partners, and Children Military service impacts not just service members but their families as well. This study employed mixed methods to examine benefit-finding among military families: service member, their partner, and one child. An adapted version of the self-report Benefit Finding Scale (BFS; Carver, 2013) was administered to each family member, and individual semi-structured qualitative interviews explored benefit-finding capabilities, as well as the appropriateness of the BFS in this population. She loves working with and mentoring graduate students, and prioritizes fostering a well-rounded graduate school experience for her students that emphasizes both hard-earned growth and self-care. Dr. K is passionate about highlighting the strengths of populations that are often only described in terms of their vulnerabilities. She hopes that by harnessing these strengths in our interventions, we can bolster the resilience and coping resources of individuals. Her program of research looks at several elements of the family system, including child-parent and parent-parent relationships, and she has been honored to work with families with a child with a chronic illness and military-serving families. She is particularly committed to employing rigorous methodologies, adopting multi-informant, multi-method approaches, and using longitudinal research designs. Clinically, Dr. K has experience conducting individual, family, and group therapy using principles from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), including third-wave CBT interventions such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). She specializes in child clinical and pediatric psychology but has experience conducting assessments and delivering evidence-based interventions with clients ranging in age from infancy to older adults.
